Good to know

How public holidays work in Cyprus

Cyprus has fixed national and religious holidays, plus a group that moves every year because it follows Orthodox Easter: Green Monday, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Pentecost Monday (Kataklysmos).

Orthodox Easter is calculated with the Julian calendar, so it usually falls later than Easter in western Europe, sometimes by as much as five weeks. This page works the moving dates out for each year.

Dates follow the public holidays of the Republic of Cyprus; the moving ones are calculated from Orthodox Easter. Some employers and banks observe extra days.

How many public holidays does Cyprus have?

Fifteen days appear on this page: ten on fixed dates and five that move with Orthodox Easter. When one falls on a weekend it is not moved to a weekday.

Why is Easter on a different date in Cyprus?

The Orthodox Church works Easter out with the Julian calendar, while western churches use the Gregorian one. In some years both fall on the same Sunday; in others Orthodox Easter is up to five weeks later.

What is Green Monday?

Green Monday (Kathara Deftera) is the first day of Orthodox Lent, 48 days before Easter Sunday. Families traditionally spend it outdoors with a picnic of vegetables, olives and seafood, and fly kites.

What is Kataklysmos?

Kataklysmos, the Festival of the Flood, is celebrated at Pentecost, 50 days after Orthodox Easter. Coastal towns, Larnaca above all, hold fairs with water games, music and stalls, and the Monday is a public holiday.

Are shops open on public holidays in Cyprus?

Banks, schools and public services close. Many shops close as well, especially on religious holidays, while shops in tourist areas, kiosks, bakeries and restaurants often stay open. Check with the business before you go.
