When does a name celebrate?
Good to know
What is a name day?
In the Greek Orthodox tradition most first names are linked to a saint or a feast, and people celebrate on that day each year. In Cyprus and Greece a name day is often marked as much as a birthday: friends call, visit and wish "Χρόνια πολλά".
Which calendar is this?
The calendar of the Church of Cyprus and the Church of Greece. Fixed feasts fall on the same dates as the everyday calendar (Christmas on 25 December, Saint Nicholas on 6 December), unlike Orthodox churches that keep the old calendar and celebrate 13 days later.
Why do some name days change every year?
Feasts tied to Easter move with it, because Orthodox Easter falls on a different date each year. Saint George, for example, is celebrated on 23 April, but on Easter Monday when 23 April falls before Easter.
What do I say to someone celebrating?
"Χρόνια πολλά" (chronia polla), which means "many years". It is the usual wish for name days, birthdays and holidays.
